Something perfect is something flawless. And let’s be honest, such thing doesn't exist, at least in our world. So, this is for people who pursue perfection, and in this pursuit, they fail to do enough, and in some cases, they even fail to start because of the image that they have created in their head.
Of course, you should aim to make something as good as possible, something that has superior quality, but we shouldn’t try to waste time fixing every single minor error.
In a lot of cases, that would create such a big delay that people would get discouraged. Because that’s what’s behind perfectionism: fear. Perfectionism is a thief of time. And not actually doing what you're supposed to do will become a form of procrastination.
“Perfectionism is a self destructive and addictive belief system that fuels this primary thought: If I look perfect, and do everything perfectly, I can avoid or minimize the painful feelings of shame, judgment, and blame.” - Brené Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection
But when it comes to creating something or taking a chance it’s always better to do it than not do it. It’s easier to live with the regret that you’ve tried something than it is to live with the regret of not taking a chance.
Most of the time, spending all this effort to achieve that last tiny percent is not going to be worth it. overanalysing can cost you entire hours, depending on your project, of course, but those hours can be put into the actual work and you can make tweaks as you go.
This is especially for people who like to write, the ones who want to make a Youtube channel or start a blog. Overcome this need for perfectionism; start earlier and you will thank yourself later.
This can apply to everything. Maybe you have to do a presentation and you end up not showing it because you’re not happy with what you did. Don’t put that much effort into something that won’t matter in a few days or weeks.
We’re only humans, we have limits and, most importantly, limited time, so it’s better if we just go with the flow. That doesn’t mean to give in and lose discipline, it means to find the balance, the right amount of everything.
Life nowadays can be really stressful as it is, so don’t put even more stress on yourself by demanding perfection.
So keep wanting the best for yourself, keep working hard and smart, but don’t let your expectations hold you back from actually doing what you have to do.
