Man ready to write in his journal

Take a piece of paper or open a word document

Just start writing. Write what’s on your mind as a form of letter to yourself or to God, or you can even write it as a piece of fiction.

There are multiple ways to go about this, but I’ve found that the best one is to start writing about this very moment of your life.

Writing can be seen as a form of therapy. It can have a healing effect. It can help you get rid of some stress. It can even give you strength.

“I write to give myself strength. I write to be the characters that I am not. I write to explore all the things I'm afraid of. ” - Joss Whedon

Maybe you’ve been through a traumatic event. Maybe you didn’t. Maybe you just feel lost at the moment, you have no direction in life, or there are some struggles that you can’t seem to escape or solve.

It doesn’t matter that you haven’t written before. Just give yourself five minutes of thinking and writing. At the end of those five minutes, you may have a few words or a page. It doesn’t matter, you can work even with a few words, reflect on them, they have a meaning and it can be quite deep.

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” - Maya Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

It’s not only about writing some book, it’s about exploring yourself. And you can even do it by fictionalizing the events that you’ve been through.

By transforming your life into a fantasy, you can detach from it to a good degree, which will allow you to have an objective point of view.

"Fantasy is hardly an escape from reality. It's a way of understanding it." - Lloyd Alexander

You will become a God in your own story, able to watch from above as everything develops.

And you will not only have access to the past and present, but you will even start considering how the story will develop from the present moment. You will see options that you have never considered before.

“I can shake off everything as I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn.” - Anne Frank

If you don’t want to read what you’ve written, that is totally OK. Just look at it as a way to get something off your chest.

Some people throw the paper away or delete the document. Some people do that, but I suggest you keep it.

Let some months go by, maybe years, and then come back to what you’ve written, and hopefully you’ll be amazed at how you’ve managed to overcome a bad period in your life.

Conclusion

Writing can be a powerful tool and, nowadays, is criminally underrated. By writing, you will be able to understand yourself better and to discover things that you didn't even consider about yourself. There is something magical about transferring your thoughts on paper, and it can definitely work as a form of therapy.

Cheers!
